Description

Camp Description:
In this dynamic course, teen students will take on the role of curators and event planners as they organize and prepare the end-of-summer showcase for all elementary and high school art camp participants. This hands-on experience will give teens the opportunity to learn the ins and outs of exhibition planning, from selecting artwork and designing the layout to event promotion and setup. By the end of the course, students will have created a professional-level exhibition that highlights the artistic achievements of their fellow campers.

Session Structure:

  • Introduction to Exhibition Planning: Learn the basics of exhibition curation, including how to organize and present a diverse range of artwork, from elementary to high school students. Discuss the goals and theme of the showcase and plan accordingly.
  • Artwork Selection and Coordination: Work with instructors and peers to select pieces from each camp, ensuring a balanced and engaging mix of work. Students will focus on curating pieces that best represent the creativity and growth of each participant, making sure to include various mediums.
  • Gallery Layout and Design: Learn how to design a cohesive exhibition layout, considering the flow of the space and how viewers will move through the gallery. Students will plan where to place each artwork to create an engaging and visually appealing experience.
  • Event Promotion and Materials: Develop marketing strategies for promoting the exhibition, including designing flyers, posters, and digital invites. Students will also write artist statements or descriptions to accompany the show.
  • Exhibition Installation: Gain hands-on experience installing the artwork, ensuring it is displayed securely and professionally. This includes framing, matting, and placing labels.
  • Planning the Opening Reception: Organize the logistics of the opening reception, from setting up refreshments to creating a schedule for speeches or performances. Students will learn how to plan an event that brings the community together to celebrate the young artists' achievements.
  • Day-of Coordination and Hosting: On the day of the showcase, students will act as exhibition hosts, guiding visitors through the space, answering questions, and making sure the event runs smoothly.

Educational Objectives:

  • Understanding of Exhibition Curation: Teach students how to curate an exhibition by selecting, organizing, and displaying artwork in a way that is visually cohesive and engaging.
  • Practical Event Planning Skills: Provide teens with hands-on experience in event planning, from coordinating logistics to promoting the exhibition and managing the opening reception.
  • Collaboration and Leadership: Encourage leadership and teamwork as students collaborate with instructors, peers, and younger artists to bring the exhibition to life.
