Camp Description:
In this unique adventure camp, participants delve into Jules Verne’s Journey to the Center of the Earth, using the book as a springboard for creating detailed and thematic art projects. Each student receives a copy of the book to inspire their creations, which will include crafting detailed geological layers, making luminous fungi, and constructing models of prehistoric creatures described in the narrative.
Session Structure:
- Book Distribution and Thematic Introduction: Each student receives a personal copy of Journey to the Center of the Earth. The first session includes an introduction to the book's major themes and settings, emphasizing the underground journey.
- Geological Layer Projects: Students create STEAM based projects to make cross-sectional models of the earth using various materials to represent different geological layers mentioned in the book, such as limestone caverns and volcanic tubes.
- Luminous Fungi Art: Inspired by the bioluminescent fungi found in the novel’s underground scenes, students will use glow-in-the-dark paints and materials to create their own luminous fungi artworks.
- Prehistoric Creature Sculptures: Participants sculpt models of the prehistoric creatures that the explorers encounter in the underground world, using descriptions from the book as guidelines for their designs.
- Interactive Exploration Maps: Students design and create interactive maps that outline the explorers' route through the novel, incorporating pop-up features or hidden elements that reveal facts about the journey and discoveries.
Educational Objectives:
- Direct Connection to Literature: Engage with the text in a manner that encourages detailed understanding and appreciation of the story’s adventurous and scientific elements.
- Creative Representation of Geological and Biological Concepts: Apply artistic skills to represent geological formations and biological phenomena described in Verne’s narrative.
- Hands-on Experience with Thematic Elements: Gain practical experience in translating literary descriptions into visual and tactile artworks.
- Presentation and Collaboration: Enhance communication skills through presenting created works, explaining their relevance to the novel’s plot and scientific aspects.
Materials Provided:
All necessary supplies, including clay, paint, construction paper, glow-in-the-dark materials, and crafting tools, will be provided to the students. Each participant will also receive a personal copy of the book to use as a reference throughout the camp.
