Description

Course Description:
This course builds on foundational gardening skills, focusing on the application of art and design principles to create a garden that is not only productive but also deeply reflective of personal style and aesthetics. Over four weeks, participants will learn how to analyze and apply elements of art—such as color, form, line, texture, and balance—to develop a garden space that is both mindful and beautiful. This course is ideal for those who want to transform their garden into a cohesive expression of personal aesthetics while maintaining its functionality.

Course Objectives:

  • Understanding Art Principles in Garden Design: Delve into the principles of art and design and learn how they can be effectively translated into garden planning and layout.
  • Developing a Personal Aesthetic: Explore various garden styles and artistic influences to help identify and refine your personal design preferences.
  • Applying Design Concepts Practically: Learn to apply concepts such as proportion, balance, harmony, and contrast to create a visually appealing garden.
  • Mindful Design Techniques: Incorporate mindfulness into the design process, using the garden space to foster relaxation, reflection, and connection with nature.
  • Hands-On Design Implementation: Engage in projects that allow for the practical application of design principles, resulting in the creation of a detailed garden plan by the end of the course.

Course Outcomes for Students:

  • Mastery of Artistic Garden Design: Students will gain the ability to see and implement garden designs that reflect artistic principles, creating spaces that are not only functional but visually appealing.
  • Development of Personal Style: Participants will develop a clear understanding of their personal style and how to express it through garden design.
  • Practical Design Skills: Gain practical skills in sketching, drafting, and spatial planning to transform design ideas into actionable garden layouts.
  • Enhanced Aesthetic and Functional Integration: Learn to integrate aesthetic considerations with practical aspects of gardening, such as crop rotation, plant health, and seasonal changes.
  • Creation of a Comprehensive Garden Plan: Each participant will leave the course with a complete garden design plan that integrates the principles of art with personal and practical considerations.

Requirements:
Participants should have some prior knowledge of basic gardening and an interest in expanding their understanding of garden design. This course is suited for gardeners who wish to deepen their ability to create spaces that reflect their personal aesthetics and values.

Materials:
All necessary materials will be provided, including access to design software, graph paper for sketching, and a variety of plant catalogs for inspiration. Participants are encouraged to bring photographs of their current garden space and any inspirational materials they have collected.
