Description

Comics for Adults is designed to introduce adult learners to the art of comics and storytelling. Over eight weeks, students will explore the building blocks of comics, from narrative structures and character design to inking techniques and panel layouts. Guided by expert instructors and inspired by contemporary comic artists, students will create their own short comics by the end of the course. This course aims to provide a comprehensive introduction to the world of comics, offering practical skills, artistic insights, and a supportive community for aspiring comic artists.

 

Course Outcomes for Students - 

Comic Storytelling: Understanding the basic elements of narrative, pacing, and visual storytelling within the comic format.
Character Design: Learning how to create compelling characters through sketches and basic drawings.
Inking Techniques: Introduction to line weight, simple cross-hatching, and other inking methods.
Panel Layout: Experimenting with basic panel structures to dictate pacing and flow.
Color Theory: Basic color techniques using colored pencils or watercolor for emphasis and mood.

Narrative Integrity: Providing the skills and understanding needed to translate stories and themes into comic form.
Technique and Skill: Introducing foundational techniques such as inking, layout, and basic coloring.
Community and Collaboration: Creating a nurturing environment where peer review and shared learning are encouraged.
Hands-On Practice: Weekly exercises to practice newly learned skills, leading to a small finished comic project.

Requirements - A curious and interested mind, no experience is necessary for this course.  

Materials - All regular course materials are included, though students may receive lists of supplies if they would like to practice at home after the course ends.
