Description

Advanced Comics for Adults is aimed at refining and expanding the existing skills of adult learners in the world of comic arts. Over eight weeks, learners will deep-dive into specialized storytelling methods, advanced visual techniques, and complex character development, among other topics. The course combines rigorous creative exercises with theoretical understanding to help artists create more nuanced and complex comic narratives.

 

Course Outcomes for Students - 

  • Advanced Narrative Structures: Understanding and using non-linear storytelling, ensemble cast dynamics, and thematic layering.
  • Visual Composition and Visual Language: Advanced study on creating atmosphere and tone through color theory, light/shadow play, and cinematographic principles.
  • Character Depth and Development: Techniques to imbue your characters with psychological depth and development arcs within the narrative.
  • Genre Exploration: Detailed exploration of sub-genres within comics such as autobiographical, surreal, and post-modern comics.
  • Advanced Inking and Coloring Techniques: Mastery over various advanced techniques like cross-hatching, stippling, and using color harmonies.
  • Advanced Lettering and Typography: Learning to integrate expressive and dynamic typography as part of the comic's narrative.
  • Professional Practices and Industry Insights: Detailed guidance on portfolio development, intellectual property rights, and networking opportunities.

 

Requirements - A curious and interested mind, and some comics experience is necessary for this course.  

Materials - All regular course materials are included, though students may receive lists of supplies if they would like to practice at home after the course ends.
