Description

Introduction to Pencil Shading is a foundational course designed to teach young artists the essential techniques of shading with pencils. Over the course of four weeks, students will learn how to use shading to create depth, dimension, and texture in their drawings. The class will cover a variety of shading techniques, including hatching, cross-hatching, stippling, and blending. Students will practice these techniques through guided exercises and projects, gradually building their skills and confidence. By the end of the course, participants will be able to transform simple line drawings into dynamic and realistic artworks using pencil shading.

Course Outcomes for Elementary Students - 

  • Mastery of Shading Techniques: Students will learn and practice various shading techniques, such as hatching, cross-hatching, stippling, and blending, to create different textures and effects.
  • Understanding Light and Shadow: Participants will gain an understanding of how light and shadow interact, learning to observe and depict these elements to add depth and realism to their drawings.
  • Application of Shading: Students will apply shading techniques to various subjects, including still life, landscapes, and portraits, enhancing their ability to create lifelike and dimensional artworks.
  • Improved Fine Motor Skills: The course will help students improve their fine motor skills and control over their drawing tools, essential for precise and effective shading.
  • Artistic Confidence: By practicing and mastering pencil shading techniques, students will gain confidence in their drawing abilities, encouraging further artistic exploration and expression.
  • Completion of Shaded Drawings: Each student will complete several shaded drawings, showcasing their ability to use shading techniques to enhance their artwork.
  • Creative Expression: The course will encourage students to experiment with shading to express their unique artistic visions, fostering creativity and individual style.

Requirements - 
A curious and interested mind, no experience is necessary for this course.  


Materials - 
All regular course materials are included, though students may receive lists of supplies if they would like to practice at home after the course ends.
