Introduction to Oil Painting: Techniques and Textures is an eight-week course designed for adults who wish to explore the rich and versatile medium of oil painting. This course is suitable for beginners and those looking to deepen their understanding of oil-based art. Students will learn about the fundamental techniques of oil painting, including brush handling, color mixing, layering, and glazing. The course will also delve into various textures that can be achieved with oil paints, from smooth gradients to impasto effects. Each session combines practical demonstrations with hands-on projects, allowing students to apply what they learn directly to their canvases. By the end of the course, participants will have a solid foundation in oil painting techniques and the confidence to express their creative visions through this enduring art form.

Course Outcomes for Students - 

  • Understanding Oil Painting Materials: Students will become familiar with the tools and materials essential for oil painting, including different types of brushes, canvases, and mediums. They will learn how to prepare their painting surface and maintain their painting tools.
  • Mastery of Fundamental Techniques: Participants will learn core oil painting techniques such as blending, scumbling, and layering. They will practice using these techniques to create depth, volume, and texture in their paintings.
  • Exploration of Textural Effects: Students will explore how to create various textures using oil paints, from thick impasto to fine detailing. This includes experimenting with additives that alter the body and drying times of oil paints to achieve different effects.
  • Color Mixing and Application: The course will cover the basics of color theory as it applies to oil painting, including how to mix colors effectively and how to create a harmonious color palette for their artwork.
  • Development of Personal Artistic Style: Through guided projects and individual exploration, students will begin to develop their own artistic style. They will be encouraged to experiment with different subjects and styles to find what best expresses their personal vision.
  • Completion of a Series of Oil Paintings: By the end of the course, each student will have completed a series of oil paintings that showcase their new skills and artistic growth. These works will demonstrate their ability to handle various techniques and textures within the medium.

Requirements - A curious and interested mind is all that is necessary for this course! 

Materials - All regular course materials are included, though students may receive lists of supplies if they would like to practice at home after the course ends.
