Description

This course introduces young students to the dynamic world of comic book creation, focusing on the art of storyboarding and narrative development. Participants will learn how to transform their imaginative stories into visual sequences, using a combination of drawing techniques and storytelling principles. The class will cover the basics of character creation, plot structure, and the visual language of comics, such as panels, speech bubbles, and action lines. Students will be guided through the process of developing their own short comic strip from initial idea to finished storyboard, enhancing their ability to tell stories in a compelling visual format. 

Course Outcomes for Elementary Students - 

  • Narrative Skills: Students will learn how to structure a story, including the development of a beginning, middle, and end, ensuring their narratives are engaging and coherent.
  • Character Creation: Participants will gain the ability to create unique characters, understanding how to express their characters’ traits and emotions visually.
  • Visual Storytelling: Students will master the use of comic panels, speech bubbles, and action lines to effectively tell a story visually, learning to control pacing and mood through these elements.
  • Drawing Techniques: The course will enhance students' drawing skills, focusing on how to illustrate characters and settings that bring their stories to life.
  • Creative Expression: Participants will be encouraged to develop their personal artistic style and to express their individual creativity through their comic strips.
  • Project Completion: Each student will complete a personal comic strip project, applying the skills learned to produce a finished, polished storyboard that showcases their understanding of comic book art and storytelling.

Requirements - 
A curious and interested mind, no experience is necessary for this course.  


Materials - 
All regular course materials are included, though students may receive lists of supplies if they would like to practice at home after the course ends.
