Description

Basic Cartooning and Character Design is a fun and engaging course that introduces young students to the art of cartooning and the basics of creating their own cartoon characters. Throughout the four-week course, participants will learn key concepts in drawing cartoons, including simplified anatomy, expressive faces, and distinctive costumes. Students will explore how to bring characters to life with unique personalities and stories, focusing on techniques that emphasize exaggeration and humor. Each session will guide students through the process of sketching, developing, and refining their own cartoon characters, culminating in the creation of a short comic strip featuring the characters they've designed. This course is perfect for young artists interested in the world of cartoons and animation, providing them with the foundational skills to start their journey in visual storytelling.

Course Outcomes for Elementary Students - 

  • Fundamentals of Cartoon Drawing: Students will learn the basic principles of cartooning, including simplified anatomy for cartoon characters, effective use of lines, and the creation of stylized forms.
  • Expression and Emotion: Participants will master the art of conveying emotion through exaggerated facial expressions and body language, which is essential for dynamic cartoon character design.
  • Character Personality Development: Students will develop the ability to create characters with distinct personalities and backstories, enhancing the depth and interest of their cartoons.
  • Design and Costume Creation: The course will teach students how to design memorable and appropriate costumes that reflect their characters' roles and traits.
  • Creation of a Comic Strip: Each student will apply what they've learned by designing and producing a short comic strip that showcases their characters in action, demonstrating their understanding of narrative and visual flow.

Requirements - 
A curious and interested mind, no experience is necessary for this course.  


Materials - 
All regular course materials are included, though students may receive lists of supplies if they would like to practice at home after the course ends.
